Health Ecosystem Value Design: Value Sensing, Exploration, Strategy and Co-Creation Framework

In Health Ecosystem Value Design: Value Sensing, Exploration, Strategy and Co-Creation Framework, Chris Lawer, Umio Founder and CEO explores how a commonly used metaphor for health systems - ecosystems - can be applied more deeply and appropriately to better understand complex health problems, conceive of novel systemic-level value propositions, co-create impactful interventions and solutions, and ultimately, accelerate the means and capacity to redesign health systems, value and wellbeing.

Written for designers, researchers, educators, innovators, managers and policymakers, the book sets out a complete framework for framing, understanding, co-creating, adapting and transforming value and wellbeing in health and care ecosystems - sustainably.

Umio Assemblage Model of Embodied Health Experience and Affective Capacity

This infographic displays Umio’s model of subjective health experience (or affect) in a frame of contexts of events and states, duration, encounters, practices, places and forces.

An assemblage is an analytical framework for understanding distinct, repeating, pervasive subjective experiences with health (and disease). The model guides the exploration and relational mapping of the diverse forces, entities, encounters, practices and spatial factors that produce health and disease in real experience, within a frame and duration of context. It is also a design tool for co-creating propositions and interventions of any kind.

Evolving Health Systems and Value through an Ecosystem Perspective

This infographic displays the evolution of health systems overlaid with the Umio health ecosystem value frame/perspective on a single page.

The thick white line indicates the evolution of health systems over time through eras 1.0 (acute care) to 4.0 (ecosystems). The shaded areas indicate the depth and reach of an ecosystem value perspective when enacting the listed jobs-to-be-done successfully. The central "assemblages of health" model drives transformation to create / realise ecosystem value.

The Evolution of Value: From Exchange to Ecosystem

This infographic portrays the evolution of value from a marginal utility "exchange" to an ecosystem perspective.

It details four varieties of value: exchange, use, co-created and ecosystem and for each highlights their key dimensions, measures, discourse and methods of creation

Health Ecosystem Value Design® “Value Canvas”

This “value canvas” compares Health Ecosystem Value Design® with Human-Centred Design and other commonly used generative design thinking methods.

It does so across 20 dimensions that include: Complexity and Breadth of Health Contexts, Systemic View of Health and Care, Depth of Problem Learning / Inputs, Outside-In Objectivity, Novelty of Ideas / Concepts Generated, Ecosystem Value Model and Measures, Cost of Projects, Speed of Projects and the Reusability of Design Outputs and Learning.

Umio Assemblage Model of Embodied Health Experience in Life and Affective Capacity (short version)

This short video (without narration) depicts Umio's model of emergent subjective experience (or affects) with health in a frame of contexts of duration, encounters, practices, places and forces.

At Umio, we state that health is subjectively experienced from the dynamic interactions of somatic-motor, perceptual-cognitive, action-behavioural and socio-environmental generated affects. Affects, both positive and negative, arise from encounters between diverse natural, man-made and social entities in physical and virtual places, and from the effects of a multiplicity of outside-in and inside-out forces over a duration.

Affective Capacity (AC) is the power to recover, stabilize, modify or transcend subjective experiences with health (or to bring them forth) and to adapt or repeal forces. AC, formed from combinations of sense-making, encounter and force capacities, can be explored, assessed, understood and improved at the individual, family, social/community, population or ecosystem level.
